Lack of boys in Universities is a problem for girls too
Cristina Mazilu
The “boy crisis” in higher education in Romania is not just a problem for men – it’s a big problem for females too and affects our whole society.
Studying at the Faculty of Journalism often gives me the impression that I am participating in a sorority gathering. I meet women everywhere -- in the library, on the corridors, waiting for the elevator and of course in the classrooms. The very few male representatives definitely lose themselves in the feminine crowd. We barely notice them at the beginning of every course, when we hear the teacher saluting us with the already famous, “Good morning, girls… and yoy.”
This female domination has became tedious beyond belief. As a representative of the feminine majority I can say that, far from having my ego increased, I feel kind of bored and annoyed.
From my point of view, the University should improve its “diversity” standards. A 50-50 ratio would enliven the atmosphere and give a little color at our student life. After all, slow dancing between girls, in absence of alternatives, at the Faculty’s Prom is NOT FUN!!
We have a problem here and we need to do something about it: we girls want to study alongside men. We are proud that we are doing better, but boys need to do better as well. An unequal society is an unhealthy society. The government, experts and educational authorities ought to investigate the roots of this problem and take action – for all our sakes.
