Despite the rain, more than 250 young people turned out on a recent Saturday morning for “spring cleaning” at the Dimitrie Brandza Botanical Garden.
This was the second year that the NGO Teamwork has organized the event. The actual owner of the garden, the University of Bucharest, seems happy to allow volunteers to do a job it seems unwilling or unable to do itself.
“The only thing the university told us was that we could manage the cleaning the way we know,” said project coordinator Anca Anton. “But an important side of the event is of course the civic aspect. “A lot of those who came are very enthusiastic. This is one of the most important things that motivate us organize this kind of projects”, added Anton.
Participants were motivated by a strong desire to make a difference. “What helps me is the idea of working for the sake of society,” said Iuliana Deiu, a first year law student. “For me, the feeling that I am not the only one who wants to do something has a pretty big impact. After all, it’s the small things that lead to the big ones.”
Third-year veterinary student Alina Sandu agreed: “When I come back to visit the garden in the future, I will know that I helped with the cleaning too,” she said.
